Local Beer, Fellow Locavores & Green Roofs

Local food & drink
I had the pleasure of attending a local beer tasting this past weekend.  The event was organized by Kristi and Darry from Boston Localvores.  Check out their website here to see a list of the breweries and beers they selected…yum!

Also, we’re really excited about a new collaboration with JJ Gonson.  JJ is the 2007 Best of Boston Personal Chef and a BIG TIME Locavore.  She has great info on her site and will be putting up local recipes of the month on the SLF website.  She’ll also do an occasional blog post.

Green Roofs
Ok, so you probably have heard of Green Roofs, but did you know that we have a Green Roof company in Somerville?  Apex Green Roofs is a locally owned design and installation company in Somerville.  We’re really happy to have Derek and Charles on board.  Check out their website.

Local music this past weekend
Props to local musician Jesse Dee for his wildly successful CD release @ Johnny D’s.  Jesse grew up with friends of mine, is a great guy and a REALLY talented musician.   He brought out the crowd too, as there was the biggest line I’ve seen in the ‘ville in a LONG time.

Also, in case you missed it, there was a moped & scooter rally in Somerville this weekend.  It was accompanied by some cool music, live and outside in the middle of Union Square.  Kudos the the Somerville Arts Council, who do a tremendous job supporting fun and entertaining events for our community.

SLF has a cool event in the works
Just a mention for now, but with the new Dairy Barn @ Kickass Cupcakes open and a new local food market opening up from the owners of Sherman Cafe, SLF is going to put together a local food night at a cool location around the hood….stay tuned!

Keep it local, keep it fresh,
JG

Sustainable Delivery Service? How about Fair Trade Chocolate?

As we start out on the post-Locavore blog journey, we’re taking the blog in a new direction.  We’ll try to focus on new businesses in and around Somerville or lesser-known gems that you SHOULD know about.  We’ll also be keeping the posts much shorter and more frequent.  So with no further ado….

  • The New Amsterdam Project is a bike-powered delivery service that has been in the news alot lately.   They are members of Cambridge Local First, and we’re looking for ways to partner with them as well.  Check out their latest offering, which may be a great solution for you:  Local Delivery from the Harvest Co-op
  • Did you know we have a Fair Trade Chocolate Manufacturer in Somerville?  Taza Chocolate is a member and have a very cool outlook on business.  I encourage you to check out their website and their products.  You can find them in a lot of local businesses, including Grand, Dave’s Fresh Pasta and True Grounds.
  • Soon to be member, Methok just opened in Union Square @ 62 Summer St.  Tsering Lha, owner and operator, has brought us an amazing collection of handcrafted products from Tibet, India, Nepal and many other nations.  Check them out here …and if you’re wondering:  Methok is the Tibetan word for Flower.

That’s all for this time.  As always, if you want to recommend a business, add a comment!

Keep it local – Keep it fresh,
Joe
