In these turbulent times, remember who to trust

Where the trust lies
SLF is working on an op-ed piece to talk about the recent economic crisis and it’s relation to the local movement.  We’ll let you know when it gets out there, but in the meantime, here’s some food for thought.
We have spent a lot of $$$ bailing out large financial firms who focused on and profited from an economy that was not based in the real world.  One of the main reasons to support Main St. is that those businesses are based in reality and in communities.
By keeping things smaller, more local and more person-oriented, we are building a natural protection into the kind of breakdowns we have seen in recent days.  And by supporting our neighbors with our dollars, we’re making investments that are sure to pay dividends.
Welcome Bowl & Board!
We’re lucky to have added a very cool local housewares alternative to the somerivlle business communtiy.  A recent relocation from Cambridge, Bowl & Board is now operating in the old Mcyntire & Moore bookstore in Davis Square.
This organization has a rich history and a commitment to the stakeholder model of doing business.  Here are a couple of exceprts from their website:
Bowl & Board boasts a long history of treating our employees like family. We really think it shows in the way they interact with our customers. Bowl & Board’s employees form a cohesive team that takes personal interest in the business and are fully empowered to take action to make customers happy”.
Unlike many houseware chains, our buyer does not sit in some corporate office. Instead, she is on the floor of the Cambridge store at least five days a week experiencing first-hand what customers are buying, staying alert of trends, responding to customer recommendations, and stocking shelves with a fresh selection of merchandise every day. At Bowl & Board, we believe it’s much easier to stock the items our customers want than to try and convince them to buy what we want to carry”.
Check them out as a great local alternative for housewares.
Local food, Local Beer & Local Art

If you haven’t heard, SLF is putting together an event this Wednesday, November 19th.  We have local salad and soup from Sherman Market, we’ll have local dairy and cupcakes from Kicakass Cupcakes, and we’ll be serving Mercury brewing beer and soda.  To top it off, we’ll have a local artist, Sally Miller, showing her work.  All of this will be happening at the oh-so-cool Grand in Union Square.

We’re the Dig pick for the night, and space is running out.  If you want to come, make sure to RSVP to somervillelocalfirst@gmail.com

Keep it local.  Keep it fresh.
Joe
